Nin saltworks

Nin saltworks is special in that the production process involves a variety of flora and fauna, especially algae, which contribute to the high amount of iodine in this salt. This salt is not produced mechanically, but in an environmentally friendly way by exploiting naturally available resources. The influence of wind, sun and high salinity of the sea are a wonderful gift of nature to the area.

Since 2015, the Nin saltworks has carried an environmental certificate. There is no industry in the wider area, no extensive agriculture and the saltworks area is surrounded by five national parks, which speaks of the purity of the product itself.

Specialties of the Nin saltworks

This saltworks over 1500 years old is visited annually by over seventy thousand people. Its age is evidenced by numerous archaeological sites and excavations from the Illyrian period. Despite major changes throughout the history of this place, salt is still produced in the same way.

Within the saltworks, there is a museum and a salt house. There it is possible to see old work tools and photos with views from the past. It is also possible to see documentaries in Croatian, German and English.

Visitors can tour the saltworks on open days during June, July and August. In August, Ninska Solana also holds a salt festival where everyone is offered the opportunity to participate in the process of collecting salt, and there are creative workshops for the youngest.

Nin saltworks is also a very rare habitat for many species of birds, over 280 of them and is one of the most beautiful nesting places of Morski Kulik and Vlastelica. These two also belong to an endangered species. The eyebrow fish is an endangered species that has adapted to life in the sea with high levels of salinity. One example is the saltwater shrimp, which is very drought-resistant.

There is also diverse flora and it is especially interesting to see the salt marsh plant, which is known as the colour from which the pennants get their distinctive colour. It is edible and very healthy and tasty.

It is located very close to the centre of Nin, not far from the Queen Beach Resort apartments. It is easy to reach by road and easy to find on the navigation.

Nin Saltworks and “Salt Flower”

The often famous term “Salt Flower” is one of the highest quality salts on the market of the same name. The peculiarity is that ordinary salt is deposited on the bottom of the pool while the salt flower remains on the surface and is harvested by human hand or special wooden sieves. It is a product of the metabolism of algae and other microorganisms. It contains 80 different minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium.

Nin flower salt due to its abundant amount of minerals necessary for normal body function is recommended for developing children and pregnant women. It is even possible to make a solution for rinsing the nose and inhalation from this salt.

Combined with water it provides an ideal liquid to improve oral health. It has been proven by doctors, dentists and nutritionists that this salt has a more important meaning for the body than the spice itself.

The salt flower can be bought in many stores along the coast and even in Zagreb. In addition to the salt flower, there is a special smoked salt dried on the slopes of Promina. Chocolates, cheese, honey, jam and olive oil are also produced, all with the addition of salt flowers. Cosmetics are used to make soaps, various peels, shower gels and, of course, fragrant bath salts. As part of that, souvenirs and gift packages can be purchased.
